Have you all seen an obvious pattern in the industry? EVERY rising female star, go through this disgusting phase where media tried to set them up and paint them as undeserving of all the success they have? I ain’t joking. Let’s see the examples shall we;
1. The infamous Britney Spears meltdown.

Britney had a notorious, and fast rising career in the early 00’s. Her career peaked with the infamous single Toxic and Oops I Did It Again. But the following years, wasn’t looking too good for her.
Starting from 2005, there were many, and i said MANY, media play used against her. Saying she was not a good wife, not a good mother, a sl*t, and untalented. She ended up having a huge meltdown and attacked the paparazi. She also create an iconic “dark” era called “Blackout”
2. The Lady Gaga “satanic” narrative.

Lady Gaga surprisingly makes a huge push early 10s. Another pop phenomenon i might say! She was rising fast, and rising bright! Few of them being “Bad Romance”, “Poker Face”, and the notorious “Born This Way”
A female woman rising that fast, what could be the reason? Her talent? Artistry? Vocal power? No! It’s satanic deal of course! Everybody started picking and analyzing. This got a worldwide attention. Even LOTS and LOTS of nation was banning her to held a concert.
3. Selena “back-riding” Gomez

Another year went by in the early 10s, another young star start to arise. Selena started her career early, crafting her journey carefully until she had a deal with Disney and played main character in an Emmy-Winning series Wizard of Waverly Place!
Selena crafted her career slowly, in 2007-2009, she tackled both music and acting. Having 3 studio album under her belt with The Scene, and a contract with Disney, she was set to be another “disney star breakthrough” along with her peers Miley Cyrus, and Demi Lovato
But, in 2009, she met with Justin. And little did she know, the romantic journey will cost her a lot. Starting from 2010 until late 2015, she receives HUNDREDS AND HUNDREDS hate tweets, slander against her was pushed by the industry, and everybody agrees with it.
Some of the things that were said back then against her, WOULD NEVER FLY in today’s society. But the damage has been done, and she will NEVER be the same.
4. Miley Cyrus and her meltdown with the Wrecking Ball.

Miley is one of the young star rising in the early 10s. Who doesn’t know her? “Party In The USA” even blasted in every country outside the USA. Hannah Montana was every children’s favorite tv series.
But everybody starts questioning her whether she’d be sufficient enough to survive in the industry, everybody starts pitting her with her peers. She was a teenager rising in the industry, but she had enough, and release the infamous “We Can’t Stop” and “Wrecking Ball” in 2013
The SOCIETY didn’t accept this. And what do they do? See it for yourself. And i will say it again, if it were to happen in today’s society, it WOULD NEVER FLY the way it did. Everybody was eager to stripped Miley down from her success. It felt like a race or competition almost.
5. Taylor Swift

Taylor also of of the many artists that started her career early. She had a top 10 hit at the age of 16 with “Tim McGraw”. But her career catapulted following the release of “Fearless” that puts her in mainstream media. In 08 she already sold 4M copies of albums
Everybody is seeing her, and everybody hates her. The narrative of her being a “serial dater” start to arise. Accusing her to be someone who needs to be in a relationship to write great hits. People were trying to stripped her down of her talent, trying to draw her incompetent.
The cherry on top of the whole “undeserving success of Taylor Swift” narrative was the childish act of Kanye West. Interrupting her in the middle of her acceptance speech, and bluntly implied that she did not deserve the award in 2009.
But it doesn’t end there for Ms. Swift! In 2016 a huge allegation against Taylor being a hypocrite was released by big names. It sparked an internet breakthrough, celebrating the disgusting tag #/TaylorIsOverParty (which we all know, she’s FAR from over now😋)
6. Rihanna

Now we’ve come to Queen of late 2000 hits. In 2007, Rihanna introduce her third studio album “Good Girl Gone Bad”. The album gives her a lot of hit songs, she made one of the most critically acclaim album of the decade. And she gives us “Umbrella”
Along with her journey, there was a LOT of pressure and media play being made against her. Starting from the classic sl*t-shaming, and racism, also people starting to doxxed her and try to stripped her from her success using the disgusting “illegal immigrant” narratives.
But one of the MOST ridiculous thing to stripped her down from her “rising” moment, was again, a satanic deal to push her career. (MIND YOU, as ridiculous as this sound, people ATE this kind of news back in the day). The hit “Umbrella” was accused of some sort a “curse” song
People were blaming her for the continuous rain, because they correlate the heavy rain has something to do with “Umbrella” topping the chart... INSANE.
6. BLACKPINK

One of the fast rising pop phenomenon. And one of the latest girl act in music industry that has been taking the attention of world-wide audience. BLACKPINK debuted back in 2016. Into 4 years of their career, they achieved many huge things!
BLACKPINK is one of the 3rd generation of K-Pop Wave. They debuted under YGE (notoriously known for their hip-hop influenced music, and organic way of showcasing their artists’ talent). So far, YGE has successfully debuted every artist under them. One of them being BLACKPINK.
In the early age of their career, BLACKPINK made a lot of domestic impact. Even before their debut, the arrival of a new girl group from YGE has already been anticipated. People were WAITING, because YGE already promised that they’re the successor of the legendary 2NE1
By the time of their debut, BLACKPINK automatically sweeps the domestic chart. They are known to be the only group to have PAK upon their debut in that age. BLACKPINK also one of the fastest group to win a music show trophy! And sealed their presence by winning Rookie of The Year
They are loved and supported by fans. But not until 2018, where they came back with their first mini Square Up. People start questioning the authenticity of their success, people start to claim that their mediocre music didn’t deserve the worldwide stage.
From 2018 onwards, the discussion whether BLACKPINK deserves their success continues. They pick and choose on new groups/people who deserves BLACKPINK’s success. They were once a fan, but once they get bigger than they expected, they became a hater.
I can go on and on for days, but from here i guess you know what i’m trying to say. It’s no old news that people (especially men) still have this unconscious thoughts that women can’t be superior. That women can’t have freedom. Or don’t deserve success.
The prove is there whether you like it or not. It’s the reality. You can see not only in the music industry, but you can see it from any other domain. Oppression has always been something that is systemic, the pattern is there, the victim is in front of your eyes.
It’s only up to you whether you want to see it or not, but you cannot say what happen is not real. It’s very much real. I’m open to discussion, and anyone who wants to add to the list as new examples, go ahead. It’s time we realize that these talented women deserves more.
