“pronouns don’t always equal gender” nd “pronouns sometimes equal gender” r terms that should co-exist, a thread:
before we begin, everybody is entitled 2 their own opinion. i’m not trying 2 change YOUR opinion or start discourse, this is my PERSONAL opinion nd everyone’s thoughts r completely valid :D /gen
the pronouns = gender debate has been going on 4 a while now nd i understand where this is coming from. pronouns r an indication of gender in many cases as socially nd historically, women use she/her, men use he/him nd nonbinary ppl use gender neutral they/them. ++
however, in many cases, some ppl r more comfortable using multiple sets of pronouns. for example, a man may use he/they but they’re still a man. a woman may use they/them but they’re still a woman. nonbinary ppl can even use “binary” pronouns nd still be nonbinary! ++
this is because pronouns don’t ALWAYS equal gender. but saying that they never equal gender is transphobic nd watering down the experiences of many trans ppl (including myself) who use pronouns associated w/ the gender they’ve transitioned to.
so in conclusion:
claiming pronouns ≠ gender always is transphobic but also claiming pronouns = gender always is invalidating many struggles of some trans ppl!
(i didn’t include neopronouns in this thread as i don’t find it necessary 2 reiterate a TIRED point nd start discourse)
