Last night I was finally able to watch Harriet Tubman and I have to say- academia has not done their job educating this nation about her accomplishments. The blurbs dedicated to her in the books I read were short and 1 dimensional
The gif I posted of her- she’s wearing Union colors & she lead Union Troops in “armed expositions” rescuing human beings fleeing slavery in the South. As a woman & specifically as a veteran - I find this omission infuriating for many reasons 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡
In public school they show her prim and proper in a dress. They never talked in depth about the other aspects of her accomplishments- even when downplayed her story is amazing but if I had a nickel for each time I was told women couldn’t serve in combat or even serve at all...
They erased part of her history this way- denying her community what should be the country’s appreciation of the full context of her accomplishments & heroism. But also denying all women the benefit of her fierce example-
Harriet Tubman was James Bond before we even knew what that was. #AcademiaDoBetter if we can’t print the true stories of this nation’s heroines in context - then we aren’t any better than propaganda machines like OANN. Thank you to the creators of this film.
