Before this new policy, expedited removal was restricted to people who have been in the country fewer than 2 weeks and within 100 miles from the border. Now, anyone who has been in the country fewer than 2 years anywhere in the country could be snatched and immediately deported.
This authority has long been abused by the U.S. Customs & Border Patrol at the border, and now immigration agents can use it to terrorize our immigrant neighbors in communities across the country.
It’s terrifying that an agency that has wreaked so much havoc has now been given even greater authority -- and we know how they are going to use it, namely to oppress Black and Latinx people and separate families.
Agents who complete an *online training* by today (10/16) will be empowered to shake down immigrants across the country for papers, status, entry and residence without a warrant and without even the chance for a hearing before an immigration judge.
This adds to the litany of abusive ICE practices and policies, including impersonating police officers, using ruses to trap immigrants, and detaining people for long stretches of time in atrocious detention conditions regardless of their physical or mental health circumstances.
(Read this thread from @ImmDefense for a primer on ICE ruses, the ways they pose as cops, and the rights we all have in encounters with ICE https://twitter.com/ImmDefense/status/1316106028572868612)
When confronting ICE enforcement, it’s important to remember that we all have rights. Visit http://www.wehaverights.us  for videos in 7 languages on what immigrants and allies can do in encounters with ICE in five common situations.
This rule unduly burdens the lawful immigration process, allows for the collection of unreliable data from vulnerable people, subjects citizens & lawful permanent residents to invasive data collection, threatening to destroy all remaining vestiges of privacy in the United States.
