It's October 16th, 2020. That means today is the 52nd anniversary of the moment when John Carlos and Tommie Smith raised their fists to the heavens - and Peter Norman stood in solidarity - at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. (1/2)
I wrote a book with Dr. John Carlos and he has 1,000 epic stories. But my favorite John Carlos line might be when he said, "I was going to raise my fist no matter where I was. If I had been home in Harlem, I would have raised it in Harlem. I just happened to be at the Olympics."
Another John Carlos line that I love: I asked him whether he regretted raising his fist, given the terrible price that he paid for daring to speak out. He said, "I have no regrets. The people with regrets are the ones who were in Mexico City in 1968 and chose to do nothing."
