Road trip to Lamu. We had heard it is possible so we decided to make the trip and find out. Yup we were either crazy or brave or the most fun people in the world
Proposed trip Nairobi - Garissa - Garsen - Minjila - Witu - Hindi - Lamu...yeah.... I know. Who ever decided to call a town Minjila? Turns out it's named after a thorn.
Left Nairobi at 04:40 in the morning hoping to get a jump on traffic... Let's just say, Kenyans wake up eaaarrrrllly!!! Sorry if you live on Thika road. Your neighbour's wake up at 5am.
Our optimistic selves enjoyed watching the sunrise over the Thika Garissa road...
The road to Garissa is very good, and there is a lot of police presence on the road and they are very respectful.
The turn off to Garsen is before Garissa town and that is where the journey changes. Make sure you pop into Garissa to fill up your tank. It's what we did and were glad we did.
We had already been warned that the road is not complete all the way with some diversions. It is about 120kms to Hola with about 60kms being off road or under construction
The off road parts are not so bad but it def took some time, about 2.5 hours to clear the 120km section. Finally we reached Hola and we were on our way
The road from Hola to Garsen is actually very good and in some portions very straight. In some cases it felt like we were going from horizon to horizon of straight road.
Hola to Garsen is about 100 km on a very good road, you do not enter in Garsen but rather continue for another 3 or so kms to Minjila
The road to Lamu is from the turn off at Minjila, and you will see many buses and cars turning there. The junction is very busy and can't be missed. Lamu is about 113km from the turnoff.
We were pleasantly surprised that the road is paved and according to @TimGathima is the smoothest road he has ever driven on in Kenya.
Unfortunately our hope that the road went all the way to Lamu ended at Witu, and from there, there were a number of diversions. The off road parts were still good and honestly better than some roads in Nairobi 
The tarmac picks up again after Mpeketoni and there is a paved road all the way to Hindi and Mokowe. We arrived in Lamu at around 2:45.m
Security in the road.... There was a lot of police/army presence. Like A LOT.
We were stopped severally, but we weren't harassed, just normal checks. We actually felt rather safe.
Was it worth the journey? We traveled to see my dad who lives in Lamu so def it was work it. We planned to spend most of our time on the mainland and so having a car made sense. It's great seeing how the mainland is developing and maybe I'll do a thread on the developments.
