The first ever Indian airplane hijacking was done by Kashmiri nationalists, it came to be known as Ganga Hijack and Maqbool Bhat was the brain behind it. The motive of Hijack was to highlight the Kashmiri cause, nobody was hurt and every passenger was released soon after.
The Armed uprising in Kashmir was intiated and pioneered by pro-independent Kashmiris.
JKLF is Kashmir's largest international and pro independence organisation.
The first group to cross LOC for arms training were nationalists.
After a full fledged armed struggle broke out against Indian rule in 1989, JKLF was the only militant group active on ground for more than a year.
Amanullah Khan, one of the founders of the JKLF is the only Kashmiri to be jailed in a UN lockup.
Maqbool Bhat is the first Kashmiri to be hanged by the Indian state. His mortal remains are yet to be returned.
Maqbool Bhat's younger brother, Habibullah Bhat, a class 12 student, disappeared after he had gone to visit his elder brother in Tihar.
On November 18, 1994, Maqbool's brother Ghulam Nabi Bhat was found dead on Srinagar's Chanapora road. His body was found with fatal head injuries.
A year later in 1995, Maqbool's family were once again grieving. On October 4 that year, Maqbool's another brother, Manzoor Ahmad Bhat, was killed in an encounter at Trehgam, Manzoor died as JKLF's divisional commander.m
Maqbool's younger brother Zahoor Ahmad Bhat is under detention. On 11 March 2020 the government slapped PSA on him, third in a row against Zahoor Ahmad Bhat.
In 2003, JKLF under the leadership of Yasin Malik launched a signature campaign named Safar E Azadi or Journey to freedom, the purpouse of this campaign was inclusion of Kashmiris in future talks on J&K. The campaign lasted for 116 days and JKLF collected 1.5 million signatures.
Dr. Ghulam Qadir Wani, the mind behind Muslim United Front was killed by some unknown gunmen inside his fenceless yard. His niece was killed with him. Dr Wani worked with Jamat E Islami at first but then he joined ISL & later became JKLF's chief publicity officer.
Dr Abdul Ahad Guroo was a cardiologst of international repute and a staunch JKLF ideologue. The 1991 testimony of James Baker before the UNSC was based entirely on evidences & supporting documents provided by Dr Guroo.
Dr. Guroo gave the idea of Jehlum Valley Medical College (JVMC), the current SKIMS medical college.
Dr. Khurshid Guroo, the son of late Dr Abdul Ahad Guroo along with his wife Dr Lubna Guroo has purchased a 97 year old Church in the US to set up Kashmir Cultural centre.
In past three decades, the JKLF has made 3 attempts to cross the LOC. In one attempt in feburary 1992, 12 people were killed and more than 150 injured after Pakistani law enforcement agencies opened fire to stop them from getting closer to LOC.
Adv. Jalil Andrabi, a prominent human rights lawyer and pro independence political activist associated with JKLF was subjected to extrajudicial execution by Indian paramilitary troops and Ikhwanis in March 1996.
JKLF activist Nayeem Butt from PaK was killed in police firing on March 16, 2018.
Amanullah Khan has been imprisoned abroa(England 16 months,Belgium 72 days, and NewYork (in UN lockup for one day) as well as in Kashmir and Pakistan (Handwara, Gilgit, PaK,Rawalpindi, Karachi and Lahore(in the torture centre called Shahi Qilla Lahore)for his pro-indp activities.
On March 14, 2015, JKLF launched a signature campaign in PaK, on the first day of the campaign, Yasin Malik collected 15 thousand signatures in Kotli town of PaK.
JKLF has also participated in relief work in PaK and IaK during 2005 earthquake and 2014 flood.
Yasin malik has lost his right heart vavle due to torture. He is currently languishing in Tihar Jail.
For years Yasin Malik has not been able to meet his wife and his two daughters.
Even after JKLF declared ceasefire, many pro-independence fighters did not stop fighting. Manzoor Ul Islam was martyred on 19 Aug, 2004.
