Every day, 450 people die from cancer.
On 16 March, 2007, one of those people was Pam – my
wife.
I volunteer for @CR_UK for her, and today I have sent a letter asking @BorisJohnson to invest in our NHS, so that others don’t have to go through the same devastating experience
Like many others, Pam’s cancer may have been treatable had it been caught early.
But by the time Pam was diagnosed she had stage 4 bowel cancer.
At an early stage, she would have had 90% chance of survival, but as she was diagnosed very late, she had less than a 10% chance
When you read statistics like this it becomes clear that the number of people who die from cancer is not just inevitable. Government's do have the power to save lives – but to do so they must give the NHS the funding it needs to ensure more cancers are caught early.
That is why this morning I have written to @BorisJohnson
at @10DowningStreet.
I’ve asked him to think of Pam, and make sure that he invests in our NHS so that in future people get the life saving early diagnosis they need.
Joining @CR_UK as a volunteer and supporting the #ShouldertoShoulder campaign made me aware that
training more NHS staff to diagnose and treat cancer was the way that the Government could help the NHS catch
cancer early, and save lives.
So I'm proud that today I will also be handing @10DowningStreet a petition signed by thousands of other supporters of the #ShouldertoShoulder campaign – all of them asking @BorisJohnson to stand #ShouldertoShoulder
with cancer patients by supporting our NHS.
MPs from all political parties have also pledged to support more investment in our NHS.
@BorisJohnson this will also be making it’s way to you.
I hope you listen to your colleagues, and your constituents – and commit to giving the NHS the funding it needs this Autumn.
Mr. @BorisJohnson it is for people like Pam that we
need action from you today.
She was a Mother of two children, a woman with a wicked sense of humour and a great love for life that was tragically taken from her too soon.
