The goal of this event it to describe a day in the life of scientists & engineers to highlight the wide range possibilities for future STEM majors. So in this thread I am going to highlight what a day (yesterday) in the life of an indoor air researcher during a pandemic. 2/n
7 AM: Arrive at work. Unlike most #scienceathon #dayofscience tweets I start without coffee. Behind me is our net-zero test house where we investigate a range of approaches to more efficiently design, operate and maintain our homes while improving indoor air quality. 3/n
7:15 AM: Science is stymied by a stripped hex screw. This #dayofscience is will be focused on figuring out how to remove this screw. #scienceathon 4/n
7:30 AM: Quickly analyze some data to determine if our formaldehyde emission reference material is stable. Just like you want to make sure you get a gallon/liter of gas when you fill up, this work will hopefully ensure wood products emit less formaldehyde #dayofscience 5/n
8 - 10 AM: Back home, while spouse goes to work. Learn a new word with 3-year old: Knuckleboom loader. #scienceathon #dayofscience 6/n
11 AM: Drill out bolt head. Break bolt. Remove bolt. Re-tap holes. Review "COVID19 is airborne" related tweets. #scienceathon #dayofscience 7/n
11:45 AM: Daily 3-5 km mental health/physical education break. Followed by lunch. #scienceathon #dayofscience 8/n
2 PM: Lead ASTM workgroup web call to develop a new guide on formaldehyde measurement technologies. Team members from New Zealand, Switzerland, UK, California and other locations laugh at homework help requests during call. #scienceathon #dayofscience 9/n
3:30 PM: Start dinner. Assemble new bike for the homework help requestor. Test rides. #scienceathon #dayofscience 10/n
5:00 PM: Spouse home. Back to work for me. No longer stymied by a screw I get to play "scientist" in lab for a few minutes. Start a new experiment. #scienceathon #dayofscience 11/n
6:30-8:30 PM: Dinner time. And I get to learn why birds are dinosaurs! #scienceathon #dayofscience 12/n
8:30 PM - 10:30 PM: Think about work, but watch random YouTube videos and check Twitter instead. Sleep. #scienceathon #dayofscience 13/n
When I was a professor, most of my first year students had little idea of what they could do with an environmental engineering degree. Hopefully, this thread and other #dayofscience tweets give insight, inspiration and hope to future STEM students. 14/n
