This blood thirsty vampire!!

His name is Jackson.
He headed Enugu SARS.

I almost lost my elder brother & his good friends(Nonso & Nwabueze) when they were in medical school in UNEC.

This happened in 2011/2012.
#EndSARS
My brother & his friend Nonso had a disagreement with a lodge mate who made contact with this man, Jackson. He came with this team & rounded up all the able bodied young men in the compound at the time who were present. That was the beginning of the nightmare.
I was called by a girl who lived there at Port Harcourt street & immediately, I left Nsukka campus to Enugu. I got in around 4pm as that was the earliest I could because I could miss the practicals I had at the time.

I wasn't so scared because I believed it was a civil matter.
I got in touch with a young lawyer who was our friend and some other well meaning colleagues & we headed for the station.

When we got there by 7pm asking they should be released, we were told Jackson who was in charge could only effect that and he wasn't around.
We waited till 9pm when we came back from his "patrol" with more young men ready to occupy the cells they had.

Well, we got across to him & we heard the most shocking thing of our lives.
He asked us to bring ₦100k for each person or they would be tagged cultists.
There was an ongoing cult war at the time in Enugu & the governor was unhappy about it.

He gave us till Friday to meet his financial demands or have my brother & his friends paraded on national TV as leaders of the ongoing cult war.

I literally almost lost it.
This was the aesthetic part.
The gory side of this story was the torture to get a confession & written statement from them to agree to what they aren't.

Our initial mistake was trying to handle this on our own as students without our parents. Theses young boys were tortured.
Imagine having a broad shoulder, then thin wire that could cut through your skin is used to join your elbow joints together at the back while a mall 🔨 is used to excite your knee and ankle joints with jabs.

This goes on for hours while you receive slaps on your face.
You have to confess to what they want you to. This was what I was told when I came the next day to see my brother & his friends.

He asked me for all the money I had on me which was ₦5k to be able to bribe the older inmates to avoid taking their newer boxers from them in
exchange for their weeks old smelly old boxers.

When I left the station, I called my parents. I said fuck it!!

This was beyond me when I saw the bruises on his body and lines on his joints.
My mum immediately called her brother who was a local government caretaker at the time.
He sent his police men to Enugu from Nnewi and the got to the station by evening of that day. However, my dad already set out for Enugu from Makurdi with whatever Money he had because he knew that was the language they could understand.
I tried communicating to Jackson to cease with the torture but he insisted it would go on till their bail was met. It was scary. I was mentally & physically restless.

My uncle's team arrived at about 5pm that evening & they met with Jackson.
They asked for his release & that of his friends but were told that it won't happen unless the CP of police gives the order as information has already been relayed that the cult heads have been caught & soon paraded.

Apparently, they had gotten their statements!😭
They made these young men confess to what they knew nothing about. They were supposed to be paraded the next day as the culprits.

So many people lost their lives in that fracas. If they were paraded, it won't matter if they made it to any competent court or executed.
No one would care about the truth anymore.I knew this as the lawyer explained & called my dad. Fortunately, he was close by. He got into Enugu that evening but couldn't secure their bail till the next day but his presence helped alot as money was released to stall the process.
Nonso's mum came the next day and they combined funds & secured the release of the three of them.

They had stories to tell which I can't articulate all at once but one stuck:
He said every night by 11pm, officers would approach their cells and call out names.
Those names or people never returned with them the next day. Bail doesn't happen at that time.

However he overheard an officer narrating what happens to them when called out. They are usually driven to the outskirts of town to an open field & told to run.
The squad of armed SARS officers would open fire on them & leave the bodies there. These are people who don't get bail after a week or two. It's done to decongest the cells so new victims can occupy & the ring of extortion continues.

What if I didn't have the little privilege
I had to get my brother & his friends released?

I am particularly happy we have woken up to this collectively and we must not relent in our collective fight to #EndSARS and #EndBadGovernanceinNIGERIA .
