I had a conversation this week with someone about how you can work towards joining a global company like VMware. I feel a couple of things are important. You need to find an area of interest and aim for the right entry-level. This, for 99% of the people, is a PSO or SE role. 1/5
Invest time in yourself to become a Subject Matter Expert on that focus area. If you don't invest in yourself, why would a company invest in you? While on that journey, build a network. Reach out to people who work at that company, follow them on twitter/linkedin. 2/5
Of course, you should go to community events. This is not only where you can build up a network, but also where you gather knowledge. Plus, community events will allow you to participate and work on one of the most important skills: communication! 3/5
And then when you have joined, you "land and expand". All the above still applies after joining. Grow your internal network. Keep working on your subject matter expertise. Invest time in yourself. Remember that communication is key! 4/5
And if you doubt this will work... Just look at folks like @CormacJHogan (joined as support), @FrankDenneman (joined as consultant), @virtualjad (joined as SE), @alanrenouf (SE for EMC before joining VMware), I joined as a consultant as well. Yes, there's a pattern here. 5/5
