Ooh, interesting question! I have Thoughts™️, so have a thread on writing text inductions l, starting from the ground up.

1) LEARN TO WRITE. Put your writing through spellcheck. Use paragraph breaks. Vary your sentence structure. If you know this is a weak spot, ask for help! https://twitter.com/its_adra/status/1316937843684614149
Ask someone to read over beforehand for grammar, as a line editor! And pay attention to what they change so you can improve your own writing.

2) Work on technique and style. Learn about how to write poetry - there’s a lot of overlap between that and inductions.
Look into literary devices. Learn the rules so you know when you’re breaking them.

3) One unique part of text inductions is the visual structure of the text. Use that! Think about italics or different fonts or putting the words in a weird shape. (in moderation. pls.)
4) Recognize that people have different reading speeds, and in particular people who read quickly could spend three minutes on an induction that might be a fifteen minute audio. If you want to write for a person or audience who does so, you have to go long.
4a) side note but it also can’t be pure patter fluff to pad the length! That can work with audio because you can’t just skim ahead, but you can in text. I could talk a lot more about this but... just keep it in mind.

5) Use a thesaurus, but WITH CARE. Don’t use the same-
-word five times in a row (unless it’s intentional), but don’t substitute a word if you don’t know exactly what it means and that it fits there. Expand your vocabulary, but use it to be descriptive and not obtuse.

6) Read and listen to other inductions, critically.
Transcribe an audio induction and see what it looks like, how long it is. Pick apart a text induction into pieces and figure out what makes it tick.

7) This isn’t specific to text but I think it’s more relevant there: establish trust and rapport. Your audience will go-
-way deeper that way. That means having a bit of style and personality to draw the reader into the story (like tone of voice does with audio) but it also means consent warnings and not putting “you will reblog this post” in the middle of it. Please. Please do not.
Okay, that’s all I can think of for now but I almost guarantee I’ll think of something at three in the morning and add to this thread. Anyone else have tips?
