This morning was a bummer, but it’s definitely not going to end that way -- not on the last day of #HispanicHeritageMonth. Because I’ve got some great #preWGA Latinx Drama writers to tell you about!
@Dom_DidThat’s JUNTOS had me cracking up with her story of a Puerto Rican girl trying to get back to normal after the death of her father. Friends to the rescue, turning remains into jewelry and “what the hell do you do with an urn?” are just the start of this lighthearted piece.
@MiguelAParreno’s THE WHISTLEBLOWER is a fast-talking page turner about a journalist who ends up falling into the world of the Mexican cartel. It’s witty, funny without trying to be, and had some really cool FISTFUL OF DOLLARS betrayal vibes.
@sandyhamada takes the idea of illegal aliens and turns it on its head. Her script LUCHA LOPEZ: ILLEGAL ALIEN is a fun YA piece about a teen girl discovering her "alien" roots. A great Latinx genre that gives young brown voices the permission & courage to come into their power.
Holy crap, talk about a dystopian tale that also doesn’t seem too far off a-la HANDMAID’S TALE or RAISED BY WOLVES. @tom_r_santos’s EXPATRIADOS gave me a clear vision of what our country could look like if we keep going down the path we’re going… just saying.
I found a SEX AND THE CITY VIBE in
@valleyslum's LITTLE EL SALVADOR about a gay, overly-assimilated Salvadorian man trying to be more "ethnic” in order to win his ex back. A great examination of the cultural confusion that many Latinx's face, especially in the dating world.
@lanao_diego’s SECOND HOLLYWOOD showed me a fun premise I haven’t seen before: a failed showrunner trying to revive the careers of the teen cast from his cancelled show. A clever story that explores the power of diversity in our industry, both in front of and behind the camera.
And finally: I got a hometown kick out of @lucifervndrss’s GENTRIFIED, about a passing Latino man trying to stay true to his roots while also trying to start a business in his East Austin neighborhood. Think GENTEFIED, but with Austin, TX vibes.
Spread this thread around! We should be amplifying #PreWGA Latinx voices not just this month, but every month. If you have the time to check out these scripts, I promise it’s worth it. 💗
