Florida told election supervisors this week they are about to send them files on felons who are on voting rolls but haven't paid fines/fees. The state had not been doing this until now even though the law took effect in July 2019
Election supervisors said there's no way they would be able to remove anyone between now and Election Day bc the process gives people time to respond before they are removed
So Democrats are concerned that the real reason that Florida is doing this now....so that the Trump campaign could use a list of potential ineligible voters to contest the results. Attorney Mark Herron told POLITICO "it's very smelly to me."
In a statement to POLITICO, @FLSecofState Laurel Lee said that now that a federal appeals court had ruled on Florida's felon voting law "there was no legal basis to ignore the obligations" under state law. (Again, the law initially took effect July 1, 2019.)
