On Monday, I discussed in a lecture how our medical system is so rooted in white supremacy and the patriarchy that most of the time we don’t even realize how incredibly wrong the norm is. I constantly find myself writing and deleting things like “non-complaint”,
“patient refuses”, “patient complains of”. There are obviously much bigger and ingrained issues too. But once you become aware of these little ones, you start to realize how you were trained up to think this way without even really noticing what you were doing. You start seeing
it everywhere. In your own notes, in your colleagues notes, in textbooks, in papers. Our job now is to change that. Identify the issues. Point them out to your trainees. Be the voice in their head that enables them to call themselves out, but also to call you out when you fall
into your old habits.
