In today's #ThursdayThread, we're going to look at the Bucs increased use of Rob Gronkowski, especially with OJ Howard's injury. In a big matchup against the undefeated #Packers, Gronk can be a huge asset for Tom Brady and the Bucs offense. #Bucs #GoPackGo (1/12)
Brady uses Gronk best as a security blanket, especially when getting pressured. While he may not be able to run like he used to, he still excels with contested and is tough to tackle.
In this checkdown, Gronk stays in to help block, then releases across the middle. Brady finds him for an easy check down.
With this play, Brady faces quick pressure and makes a nice throw to Gronk, who is covered (4/12)
The Bucs also like Gronk as a vertical threat down the seam. Like we mentioned, Gronk doesn't run well, but is a nice contested catch target. (5/12)
On this vertical route, Gronk uses his inside leverage to get open. While he doesn't separate from the defender, his inside release allows him to stay open. Brady misses him down the seam for a big play. (6/12)
Gronk saw an increased role against the Bears, having 3 receptions for 52 yards on 5 targets. The Bucs were creative scheming him open, including on screen plays like this. (7/12)
Gronk matched up well against Bears LB Danny Trevathan. He was able to beat him several times using solid route running
Gronk also has the ability to improvise to help his QB out. When Brady faces pressure here, Gronk spins out of his route and makes a contested catch. (9/12)
On a whip route here, Gronk uses his body to gain separation. Trevathan has good coverage here, but Gronk boxes him out to be in a position to make a play. Ultimately, Gronk couldn't haul it in. (10/12)
In this example, Gronk again uses inside release and solid route running to get open. While he doesn't catch the pass, he draws a defensive pass interference from Buster Skrine. (11/12)
