y’know what I think the goal behind MCU Spider-Man is? It’s “what if Spider-Man was created today, and how would we create the same thematic conditions that make him who he is without the same social backdrop of the 60s?”
that’s what sets the Raimi movies and the MCU movies apart. The Raimi trilogy tries to meld the early 2000s and the 60s into one timeless time period so that they can make a more classic-feeling Spidey story work in modern times. MCU Spider-Man doesn’t have that choice
it’s part of the MCU, a universe with a very distinct sense of time. It’s an extremely contemporary setting. MCU Spidey couldn’t do the same thing the Raimi movies did. But without that option, they would have trouble adapting many things from early 616 Spidey
so instead, they went the Ultimate Route: Change the source material so that the original intent OF the source is maintained while still feeling like it takes place in a relatively grounded and realistic version of modern day
because the classical bombshell MJ wouldn’t have the same impact in modern times that she did when she was introduced. She was seen as a strange alternative to the traditional love interest (Gwen) at the time. But that personality is now considered conventional.
as Implicitly Pretentious was talking about in a recent video, they instead made a character that may not be a literal adaptation of Mary Jane, but carries the original intent of the character: Being a strange alternative to the traditional love interest (Liz)
y’all in the quote retweets really didn’t read the whole thread, huh? Just that first tweet. A bit dumb, but whatever
