Hi, it's me, back at it again with a rant about the various travel systems in World of Warcraft and why it's in desperate need of a revamp:
I understand that there are a lot of factors when it comes to travel and getting around, but I really want to focus on the point that WoW has become TOO MASSIVE, and adding portal rooms/more portals is not a good bandaid to the problem.
With WoW spanning multiple continents, islands, planets(?!), and timelines, getting around is insanely confusing. I had to explain to Savjz why there are two Dalarans and he just hit me with the long sigh
The convenience of fast travel should not be tied to a singular class identity (Mage). Travel in itself should not take longer than the content you are trying to complete. (Flight master paths/pathing is still Not Good)
Let's not forget to mention other things that fall into the "but why?" category: Pocket world instances that were parts of old expansions that still do not have flight (Silvermoon, Throne of Thunder)
"LUL EASY FIX BLIZZ"; it's not an easy fix. But I do feel like the scope of travel has far outpaced what WoW has currently implemented. It's about balancing exploration with convenience and respecting a player's time.
I can't really end a rant without a proposal so here goes: Your Hearthstone should not just teleport you back to a home point - it should open a UI that allows you to teleport to a previous location you have fully explored, or after meeting certain prerequisites.
I'm not even talking about getting to very specific positions on a map, just even being able to teleport to the same continent/planet would be nice. Have it cost a little gold to port, none of this cooldown crap. (Why do Hearthstones still have long CDs??)
Please get rid of city portals. They're not even consolidated. You've got some hiding in the back (Uld/Hyjal, etc), some people don't even know a Caverns of Time portal sits underneath the other portal room.
I was thinking about going into each of the different travel systems and pointing out their merits and flaws and why certain forms of travel SHOULD exist for players, but this thread is long enough already.

Getting around WoW has gone from Tedious to A Problem.
Oh, btw this thread is not about flying mounts at all. Players should go through phases of exploration in their character progressions. Each travel system should have a place. That isn't the case right now.
