John Snow was an doctor & a founding member of the Epidemiological Society of London

Snow first published an article in 1849 outlining his theory that Cholera was spread by sewerage in water. It went against the consensus that disease was spread by bad air (miasma) 1/6 https://twitter.com/trishgreenhalgh/status/1316650042317582337
In 1854 there was a severe outbreak of cholera in Soho. John Snow analysed the outbreak dynamics and identified the likely source of the outbreak was a water pump on Broad Street.

He convinced the authorities to take the handle off the pump.

It was later found that a cesspit had began to leak into the well, spreading bacteria.

Over 500 people died in that outbreak, but many more would've died if it were not for the pioneering work of people like John Snow. He is a hero.
3/6
He ignored scientific consensus and used fundamental principles of evidence based medicine & epidemiology to demonstrate a case, & in so doing saved so many lives.
4/6
Using John Snow's name whilst at the same time appealing to "scientific consensus" as a reason to believe in a theory or sign a declaration fundamentally misunderstands & misrepresents the work he did & his actions.

5/6
Science needs people who want evidence.
Science needs people who question consensus.

Science needs people like John Snow.
