/ Im not an expert in coercive control and I’ve said before that while sexual violence can have quite a bit in common they aren’t the same issue 100% of the time. I’ve lived it for a huge part of my life.
/ I don’t have all the expert knowledge on the issue, and I don’t presume to be smarter than anyone else in this. I do though, want to speak about my concerns regarding the campaign for criminalising coercive control.
/ I’m concerned first, that no state/territory has enough social support resources for this to be effective. That ranges from free childcare, therapy, employment, secure housing and income.
/ I’m concerned that highly adept manipulators will rig the laws to place their victims in jail and police lacking the solid knowledge and resources to recognise and prevent this happening.
/ If we do bring in these laws, are judges and courts going to *actually* sentence perpetrators, or are they going to let them off with community correction orders? For these to be effective perps must be sentenced.
/ there’s a practical issue of criminalising something that can’t necessarily be corroborated or ‘proved’ like a facial expression, or the emotional temperature of a relationship.
/ White Ribbon are involved with the campaign in NSW and frankly, that detracts immensely from the campaigns credibility. I also notice no Aboriginal leaders included, or people with disabilities.
/ That’s it - the thoughts that have been tumbling around my brain on this issue. I’m happy to be educated further - respectfully.
