I’m good with tech. I work in digital and yet I am regularly frustrated by poor digital products and whilst I stomp on Twitter and complain, lots of my anger stems from the fact that lots of people think the problem is them.
When people think that THEY are the problem, that affects their confidence and gets in the way of their learning. They give up because they think it’s their fault that their computer does something weird or a website isn’t doing its job
They don’t know that it isn’t them doing something wrong. I’ve used Microsoft products since the 90s but I’ve just wasted 20 minutes trying to get a windows machine to open a word document. Stupid update pop ups, demands for passwords & other crap stopped me doing a 2 minute job
I joined the @Online_Centres to help people confidently navigate the online world. Organisations like @startpointsk6 work tirelessly all year to help people learn what they need to #DigiKnow
Last summer 21% of adults in Stockport didn’t have basic digital skills - that’s why this matters. The #DigiKnow initiative is made up of organisations in Stockport have been working to improve that.
This thread started as a rant, but behind every one of my tantrums is the knowledge that a brand new learner with an old laptop and no hands on “tech support” would be sat thinking that they’re doing something wrong or that digital is too hard for them to be part of
