Anyone working in higher ed who wants to talk about the higher ed "business model" is hastening the ultimate demise of the higher ed ecosystem. Colleges do not have a flawed business model. They have a funding problem. We need to change the narrative.
I get that it's difficult for schools to admit that they're suffering because to do so risks signaling failure which will drive students and revenue away, but this is why we must change the conversation. There is no competing our way out of this. It's time for a shift.
That shift is back to a model where public post secondary education institutions are publicly funded. This must be through a combination of federal and state funds that makes institutions tuition-free.
