Thread: 80 yrs ago tonight Broadcasting House was hit by a delayed action bomb. It exploded almost an hour later during the 9pm news in English (read by Bruce Belfrage) & German (read by Carl Brinitzer). Both finished their bulletins. 1/4 #OTD @DavidjHendy https://www.bbc.com/historyofthebbc/100-voices/ww2/bh-bombs
The blast killed 7 people in BH, including four from the London office of @BBCMonitoring (whose main operations were at Wood Norton, near Evesham):
Mrs C.M. Noble
Mrs E.R. Ross-Shearer
Miss A.M. Sixsmith
J.S. Sokolow
Their names are on the Roll of Honour in the BH foyer. #OTD 2/4
Effie Ross-Shearer's name on the 39-45 BBC Roll of Honour. Above her name is that of G.W. Robilliard, the BBC fireman killed while trying to drag the unexploded bomb to where it would cause less damage. Further down is Monitoring teleprinter operator Miss A.M. Sixsmith. #OTD 4/4
