I worked for a person who assumed that because I’d been an assistant for 7 years, I was just not a good writer. That lack of talent, not opportunity, was what kept me back.

They never read my writing.

It took me 5 more years to get my first script — on Breaking Bad.
I was nominated for a WGA award for it. Been a writer since, moving my way up “quickly” (after 12 yrs of asst. work).

It is not just talent.
It is not just working hard.
It’s also access, timing, luck.

Don’t assume the length of the journey reflects the scope of the talent.
