I know most of you have heard of the BBI report. I say heard because most Kenyans have not read the document. They heard it from their respective political lords. This discussion is about how politics can mislead a people.
The political class is designed in a way that there will be always rival groups. Its the beauty of the game. The sideshows, theatrics and drama make the game sweet. This is the reason why we always have factions and tribal alignments.
The BBI report has been a dark veil deal from the start. This frenzy started right at the handshake which was jaw dropping to the allies of either parties. At that moment, Kenya lacked an opposition. It was unheard of!
Immediately the handshake came out, the DP got really angry. He felt betrayed. To him, they had invited the foxes to dine. Unbothered. Enter tanga tanga. A shadow opposition that is against BBI.
In my mind, building bridges is to bring people together. How do people get together? Funerals, weddings and church functions. These are ceremonies in which emotions run high. Walk with me.
In African culture, the burial is a very precious event. Its the final journey. To miss a burial means people will miss yours. Taboo. When a patriarch dies at 80-something, they normally have interacted and are related to many people.
Their ceremonies attract crowds. Massive crowds at times. The politician dies for a funeral.
They will come to the funeral and promise to educate the kids and support the widows. Cheers. They say that so and so us targeting them and their people. Hawatatoboa! Cheers. Then they drop their notion of the BBI report depending on the faction and attack their opponents. Cheers
The media takes advantage of the content and the heat generated to push numbers some times pushing out of context and gas lighting comments to make people feel triggered. The back n forth that ensues means more content
The BBI was the handshake's brainchild. The report is to make the country united. Its formula is to make a government with a face of Kenya. How they plan that. We are yet to find out. The report was launched and they retreated with it to their backrooms. Confused looks
The report was sent to the regions for public participation. This is basically where people were supposed to meet the committee and give recommendations to make a good report. The all inclusive report.
Also invited were various special interest groups including religious groups,PWDs, women groups etc. Good initiative!
Politicians would rather die however than see Kenyans give their opinions out there. What they did was escort the BBI team in every destination. It was like they were part of the committee. Their goal, to shift public opinion. 3 days to committee, the guzzlers start showing up.
The politicians will hold rallies, go to church, storm funerals and so forth. The frenzy makes people feel elated and want to go with the current wave. The same energy we put in on keeping up with trends is the same that informs our political decisions.
By the time it gets to presenting our views, the content is what we have been programmed to think about by our political leaders. Wait until you see the report.
I hope that one day our political class will let the citizenry make independent choices. Until then we will have to contend with the clown shows and mind games.
