There was a king Satyavrata who tried to enter Swarga Lok with his mortal body but failed. Rishi Vishwamitra decided to help him as once Satyavrat had saved Vishwamitra’s family in a severe famine by offering food.

As Satyavrata fell from sky, Vishwamitra stopped him mid-air.
The Devas allowed Satyavrata to stay mid-air. However, the sage realised that Satyavrata would fall back to ground once the spell weakened. So, he held him with a long pole. In time this pole became the trunk of the coconut tree and Satyavrata’s head became the fruit.
Satyavrat came to be called Trishanku – ‘one who is neither here nor there’.

It is also believed that child Ganesha got attracted to Shiva’s third eye and went to touch it. Shiva, then, gave him a special ball i.e., Coconut to play so that he would not touch his eye.
At one time, human and animal heads were smashed to appease God. Adi Shankaracharya denounced ‘Narbali’ and replaced it with an offering of the coconuts to fulfill desires. The offering and breaking of coconut signifies that ‘I offer myself at your feet devoid of ego”.
Coconut is similar to the human head in many ways. While the coir is compared to human hair, the hard nut looks like a skull, the water inside is akin to the blood and kernel symbolizes the mental space.
The three marks on the coconut are considered to be the three eyes of Shiva. This is why coconut is termed as auspicious in puja rituals. In wedding rituals, nariyal in kalash is a symbol of womb where the nut represents a life that bestows fertility on the bridal couple.
As it is a symbol of life, pregnant ladies are refrained from breaking coconut as it is equivalent to kill a lifeform. It is also believed that vibrations while breaking down a coconut harm the foetus in the womb.
Coconut water helps in relieving problems related to the urinary tract, intestines and kidneys. It is full of minerals, vitamins, nutrients, sugars and all other natural fluids needed for nourishment of body.
