Myth #14 #DyslexiaAwarenessMonth 2020: CHILDREN WITH AN OLDER SIBLING OR PARENT WITH #DYSLEXIA WILL ALWAYS DEVELOP DYSLEXIA THEMSELVES! No, not true. While it tends to recur in families, various studies have only reported heritability rates between 40-60%. What does this mean?
Here is 1 helpful summary for a lay-audience https://bit.ly/2BUgoLV  by @deevybee. Also, genetic influences are not only important to reading outcomes, but also to sub-components of reading , e.g., phonological awareness or spelling (Compton etal., 2001; Gayan & Olson 2001,2003)
So, having an older sibling or parent with #dyslexia increases the risk to develop it but certainly not everyone does. Also, not everyone who develops #dyslexia has a 1st or 2nd-degree relative with #dyslexia

This interesting paper "Genome-wide association study reveals new insights into the heritability and genetic correlates of developmental dyslexia" just came out TODAY (study led by Gerd Schulte-Körne) https://go.nature.com/33YIQuZ  and provides new insights.
