While the ‘campus of care’ is a good news story, it erases the years of community organizing calling for UHN and the City of Toronto to commit to affordable housing, decent work, and equitable process in the new development through a community benefits agreement. https://twitter.com/TorontoStar/status/1316333231738884096
It also outlines the intention to redevelop the very properties that the community has been organizing to protect. You can learn more about the community benefits recommendations here: http://parkdalepeopleseconomy.ca/university-health-network-community-benefits-campaign/
We champion the creation of affordable and supportive housing along with the expansion of long-term care beds, but it cannot come at the expense of the existing community or without clear commitments to community partnership and leadership at the table.
There are two opportunities for community members to intervene: tomorrow, Toronto and East York Community Council will review the proposal for the Lakeside Long Term Care Facility, and next Tuesday, Planning and Housing Committee will review the proposal for the housing.
