Thank you Ice Cube for your epiphany that proactive steps should be taken directed solely towards the Black community that is so underserved. The issues of your contract have been attacked for decades. Consider the Community Development Legislation of the 90s,..... https://twitter.com/icecube/status/1316473903628214272
The legislation has created business in our communities w/economic development in CDCs (see the Hill House in Pittsburgh) with resident owned initiatives and ownership of their own grocery in a previous food desert. Community Banking for access to capital for Black entrepreneurs
That federal funding has not only created economic engines and jobs in Black communities but also created banks whose funding is reliant on funding community projects in underserved communities. Those banks are called CDFIs (Community Development Financial Institutions.
You have a keen understanding of having access to funding with your basketball league and other businesses. That access is key. We redeveloped our neighborhood in New Orleans because of that legislation. Residents rebuilt 40 homes in our historic Black neighborhood.
While this administration answered your call, their party has spent decades attempting to rollback this federal funding that has been so evidently helpful in our communities. We would be even more distressed. And we are still distressed in the Black communities.
The Obama Administration created Promise Zone Designations to Expand Access to Opportunity in Urban, Rural and Tribal Communities almost a decades ago. Giving tax benefit and access to capital in underserved communities creating business and fueling economic development
The Trump Administration retread this Obama ideas in Empowerment Zones that only allow the Super Rich to park their money in real estate in Black neighborhoods as a tax right off but creating very few jobs or businesses.
Annually the National Urban League releases the State of Black America. This August Civil Rights organization has it’s calls returned by both parties as they make demands on the political class to serve our Black communities economically, politically, with police reform and more.
Now that you have taken a publicly political stance in the advocacy of our communities with your CWBA, I welcome you to join the National Urban League, and I’ll see you at the Congressional Black Caucus summits in the fall. Bipartisan advocacy to change Black America for the best
I encourage you to join us on the Poor People Campaign led by the brilliant Dr. Rev. William Barber @RevDrBarber dedicated to ending the wealth disparity in this country for all people. Welcome @icecube We are working in concert with you, not in competition.
