Here's the thing about cutting AHS laundry services: A Thread /1
1)Firstly, parts of the job are super dangerous. These are linens that are often soiled by blood, feces and other body tissues and fluids. Complete bio hazard. Additionally, clamps, used syringes and other medical waste are accidentally left behind in linens /2
I have done this job and worked with several team members that have accidentally been stuck by or cut with objects, and had to painstakingly wait for Hep and HIV tests. /3
Other parts of the job are super labour intensive. Wet and even dry linens weigh a ton, especially in large loads. Even with machinery to do most of the work, bins get loaded and moved by humans. Also, the job has repetitive movement, workers are prone to injury, carpal tunnel /4
2) AHS Laundry is NOT just a revenue negative department. Some AHS facilities MAKE money by doing laundry for private care / assisted living facilities. /5
Why should employees who already only make an average of $17 - $24 dollars be outsourced to a company that will pay less, only hire part time, or not offer benefits in a physically demanding, dangerous job? /6
If you think this is about saving money, it's not. It's about lining the pockets of a private, for-profit corporation. /7
