This week #StarTrekDiscovery returns! One of my (many) passion projects has been making a poster for each episode since the show debuted. Here's a thread of the designs I've come up with for the past two seasons. (1/10)
For these designs I tend to focus on single characters. If I was just making one #StarTrekDiscovery print I'd want to jam every character into the image. But with these, I can let single characters take the spotlight, which is perfect for character driven #StarTrek. (2/10)
I also love integrating different font-types, custom lettering and credit blocks into these designs and really making them part of the layout as opposed to something tacked on at the end. Plus the #StarTrek cast and crew get their due! (3/10)
I also love playing with different styles. I know many wonderful artists that work in one very distinct aesthetic but I like to bring different variations to a series. #StarTrek is great for this because it often plays in different genres within its sci-fi backdrop. (4/10)
I decided to give the #StarTrek Short Treks episodes the same treatment and I'm glad I did with all of the connections they ended up having to the #StarTrekDiscovery episodes that followed! (5/10)
I also see episode specific art as a great way to work secondary characters into prints that might not usual get the spotlight. Everyone in the #StarTrekFamily makes a special impact and some #StarTrek viewers will connect with characters in unique ways. As it should be! (6/10)
It can be crazy making these on the fly every week and then looking back to see trends in my work I didn't realize were there. #StarTrek is so visual, it's a fun challenge to be true to those visuals but give them my own spin. (7/10)
My tendency toward retro design felt like a natural fit for #StarTrek which is in many ways timeless. #StarTrekDiscovery might look updated from a production standpoint but the stories #StarTrek tells are really about the people, not the time or place. (8/10)
I'm also a sucker for complimentary posters, especially for two-part episodes. It's a fun challenge to design a print one week and then figure out on-the-fly how to design a complimentary one for Part 2. (9/10)
I hope the #StarTrekFamily will bear with me, I likely won't be able to do posters regularly this season because #StarTrekDiscovery isn't the only thing debuting this week: we've got a baby girl coming any day now! Enjoy the new season and I hope to make art for it soon! (10/10)
