Recently I’ve been asked many versions of this question: “Why do you vote democratic if you haven’t supported any candidates?” So I’d like to give an informed opinion on why I haven’t voted for trump or the Rep Party and instead voted for a personally disliked Dem as a gay person
Disclaimer*
1) I have many reasons related to discrimination, my occupation, etc. why I haven’t but I’m limiting myself to my own LGBTQ POV 2) there are many opinions from rep and dem parties I don’t agree with 3) binary politics causes the people to suffer not the government

When I answer this question, I’ll give my explanation and it gets shut down or followed up with “Well they can’t/won’t take away your rights” or “It’s not that big of an issue, don’t blow it out of proportion/overreact!” or “vote green then”
But I disagree and it’s not an option
But I disagree and it’s not an option
For instance, the 2016 & 2020 Republican GOP stance on marriage and family openly refutes and begs for the reversal of same-sex marriage. Additionally it claims gay parents are unfit and a burden on their child’s health.
Now, put aside the stance of the party at large, our president has said & done awful things for our community. This list does not provide everything that has been recorded over the last 4 years, but encompasses some of the biggest over the last 3 years https://www.hrc.org/blog/one-year-out-whats-at-stake-for-lgbtq-americans-in-2020">https://www.hrc.org/blog/one-...
Laws/policies that are passed directly affect the public’s perception and opinions of the community. They also affect LGBTQ mental health and life outcomes...
(If you need proof I can send you articles, but I’m assuming this correlation is generally accepted as common sense)

This is why having the last 3 justices appointed by a man who dislikes the LGBTQ community is scary because critical civil cases are decided here, and Amy Coney Barrett’s past decisions give reason to believe rights will be stripped or anti-lgbtq precedent will be passed.
I remember in 2016 many people claimed “they can’t take away your rights! You have nothing to be afraid of,” but look where we are today? Not only have rights been revoked, but times of LGBTQ celebrations and history have been erased and neglected by this administration.
This likely relates to the rising amounts of transgender murders the U.S. has seen over the last 4 years, overt disregard to proper gender-expansive/sexuality language, and justices who have a history of disregarding LGBTQ voices https://www.hrc.org/resources/violence-against-the-trans-and-gender-non-conforming-community-in-2020">https://www.hrc.org/resources...
If you don’t believe me just look at the comments underneath this post after @maziehirono asked ACB to stray away from using the phrase “sexual preference” at yesterday’s hearing for the Supreme Court https://twitter.com/thehill/status/1316223453570228225">https://twitter.com/thehill/s...
Besides federal authorities and systems, at a state level (with very few exceptions), unless federal precedent is established no red states are passing laws to protect both sexual orientation and gender expression (i.e., conversion therapy, housing, etc.) https://www.lgbtmap.org/equality-maps/non_discrimination_laws">https://www.lgbtmap.org/equality-...
And if not actively supporting LGBTQ people is enough, only typical rep. states currently have laws that actively prevent conversations and education related to sex, orientation, and gender in schools amongst other preventative laws (i.e., adoption, etc.) https://www.glsen.org/sites/default/files/2019-10/GLSEN-Research-Laws-that-Prohibit-Promotion-of-Homosexuality-Implications.pdf">https://www.glsen.org/sites/def...
This is plenty of evidence to support the reason why I have never voted republican. If you want more I can certainly answer more questions or provide more documentation, but I think all this suffices.
So I’d like to end this thread by adding a few personal positions...

I find it hard to vote for a person/party that doesn’t support my life as a person and doesn’t work to provide basic rights towards my community. The LGBTQ community also stands with other marginalized groups that face discrimination because we know that federal equity is needed.
