I grew up in this cult, so let me say something abt a lot of white evangelical women that’s gonna contradict the mainstream feminism conversation: these women are comfortable. They live comfortable lives. You are a bunch of shrill, hairy-pitted lesbians and they laugh at you.
Yes, they have a lot of kids, but they’re at their mega church 8 days a week and there’s always childcare. They’ve never had to work a job because they got married out of high school and their men make enough money to keep it that way.
Many are not being forced into this lifestyle, they chose it. They want it. I knew some women in the church who were forced to refer to their husbands as “sir”, but they STILL would’ve rather had everything taken care of for them than be out in these streets with us godless hoes.
In addition to living lives of comfort, they exist in an echo chamber. They attend + maybe even work at a church + send their kids to Christian school. Their god’s name is on our money, in the pledge, and in most of this nation’s patriotic imagery. Why would they even budge?
So making snarky quips about Handmaids does nothing. Calling them oppressed means nothing to them. The prolife evangelical base cannot be swayed because they are comfortable. These women know all about freedom of choice because they’re already living the life of their choosing.
Lastly and most urgently: to dismantle white supremacy on this land is to dismantle the cult of evangelicalism + the religious right. These people can’t be won over.
Also, I’m not saying don’t make fun of them. Please keep doing that. I’m just saying a LOT of these women would never dream of parting with their renovated farmhouses to go to battle for a bunch of icky brown people or the gays.
Take note that I didn’t refer to these women as happy or wealthy, just comfortable. That was on purpose. This life of comfort is one in which you never have to expose yourself to anything that may make you feel uneasy or challenge your world view.
