hot take: it’s pretty much near impossible, or at least very difficult, to appropriate korean culture because it’s been commodified so much.
don’t think this is necessarily a good thing. you’ll see someone get called out for wearing a qipao or sexualizing a culture’s traditional clothing, though hanbok being sexualized or worn is just treated as normal. I also blame kpop
I don’t think korea soft power is necessarily that good either. this ‘korean wave’ is more so catering towards the westies and leaving behind gyopos and the like. so many parts of the culture have just become products for whities
this is just a drabble from my thoughts from 5 am this morning but, to a lot of people when they say ‘appreciate korean culture’ or ‘I like korean culture’ it’s just makeup and kpop and products
