The myth that Lowell is the only good school in SFUSD hides the fact that schools like O'Connell are doing innovative interdisciplinary learning or that schools like Mission and Balboa have a rich history of youth-led activism.
The myth of Lowell being successful because its students are successful hides the fact that its homework-heavy work culture drives many students to mental illness and suicide, and allows them to internalize that quantity and output equate to learning.
The myth of Lowell hides the fact that SFUSD schools receive additional funding for all AP courses and tests administered, meaning they literally can generate millions per year off of their 130 AP offerings while some schools can barely offer a few due to staff constraints.
The myth of Lowell also promotes a myth of merit, when we know in the US merit based on test scores and grades is going to disproportionately box out Black and Brown youth because San Francisco has failed to address the enormous social inequities that exist for their families.
