THE ROLINGA : a truly Argentinian cultural phenomenon. Ever since I’ve been coming to Buenos Aires as a teenager I noticed this look/urban fashion tribe on my holidays to the city and summer months on the coast in Villa Gesell in the late 90s and early 00.
While Argentina is obsessed with The Rolling Stones and you’d be forgiven for thinking these are their ultimate fans, in fact they are an Argentinian idiosyncrasy which truly merit the #onlyinargentina hastag. Let me elaborate further.
Los ‘Stones’ are purists - obsessive fans of the band who know their whole back catalogue off by heart, while Rolingas aren’t defined by their love of the band and their music, rather, they are a cultural phenomenon more inspired by an aesthetic.
It’s not Mick Jagger’s wardrobe as a whole, rather a specific look that Jagger sported in the early 70s which they appropriated and made their trade mark.
They tended to listen to local Stone spin offs or other Rock Nacional heavily influenced by their sound such as Los Ratones Paranoicos, Viejas Locas, Turf, Los Intoxicados and Las Pelotas, to name a few.
A huge deal in the 90s, they’ve all but died out, but I always dreamed of making a street style coffee table book about them.
The outfit could comprise any or all of the following (applied for men and women) : Topper sneakers, Stone tongue and lips tattoos, light blue stone washed jeans and jackets, necklaces with lip pendants...
Palestine scarves, grown out bowl haircuts with very short fringes, dungarees, band tees with cut off sleeves, the list goes on...
The question is, where are they now?
