I want to tweet about what's happened with #/Blacktober, the Addams Family redraw, and why y'all really need to lose the attitude that everything you see on the internet is meant for you.
I'm an Addams Family fan. Grew up watching the black & white 1960s show, seen all the movies. I know the premise. A lot of what we assume to be a common cultural knowledge w/ universal recognition really isn't, and that's something to keep in mind when you do a redraw.
So that's just one issue out of the way - be mindful.
But next? Actually please, please pay attention to what you jump into before you jump right in.

#/Blacktober, from the start, has been an event FOR Black folks BY Black folks. It was designed as a way to boost systemically under-appreciated artists AND to just have fun amongst ourselves.
Not every trend that catches fire is meant for you and that's fine.

But another thing about this event is that the rules/guidelines and organizers have been visible for the start. Nobody has hidden this information - it is THERE for you if you look for it.
You're just not looking for it because it never occurred to you that you should.

This entitlement has to go. This hashtag has seen upwards of 25K posts since 10/1 and they've been experiencing extreme levels of harassment since the beginning.
Imagine how tired they are. Put yourselves in their shoes.

Have empathy.
Curb the urge to tone police them when they express frustration that publicly available rules aren't just not being followed, but not even LOOKED FOR before you wade into the fray as:
1) a person who shouldn't be participating
2) offering upsetting artwork

This is a vicious cycle.
1) Black folks state what our intentions are
2) A nonblack person enters w/ zero knowledge of what's going on + desire to be there anyway
3) Black folks express frustration
4) Nonblack person plays victim
5) Sympathizers harass Black folks
Stop it.
