A thread on the women in my life.

I have the incredible privilege of being surrounded by brilliant, empathetic women. Almost of every one of them is doing an absolute ton of unpaid work for causes they care about, whether that be as volunteer, an advocate, an activist, etc.
At work, they're no less relentless and dedicated. They show up early and leave late. They wake up in the middle of the night thinking about deliverables. They worry about their teams and the future of their industry.
Most are also parents or caregivers. The kind who read articles on how to be a good one in today's world. The kind who sit and do the homework together. Who stop everything if a kid needs to talk. The kind who kill themselves to make every special occasion extra special.
They're also the friend who always shows up. The one who sends check-in texts. They'll take 15 minutes of their precious time to talk you down from that cliff. They compose thoughtful, insightful messages instead of clichés.
And for all of that, so many of these women I know feel like they're doing a terrible job. They feel like they're always failing someone. Their mental health is trash and their physical health isn't much better. They don't feel like they're doing enough - ever.
I'm not really sure of the point of this thread, other than the fact that the weight is heavy for me today, and I know it is for some of my amazing friends too. Maybe it's the economy. Maybe it's the pandemic. Maybe it's the moon.
Whatever the cause, if you know one of those powerhouse women, today is the perfect day to tell her she's fabulous. But it's also a perfect day to tell her it's ok to lay something down now and then. That it's ok if the smile just won't come some mornings.
Tell her that her worth is in no way determined by her productivity, her media appearances, the creativity of her child's lunch, or whether she makes it to the girls night. Woman, your worth is inherent. And you can never fail at being who you are.
