I grew up on the narrative that America was a great country where people could seek opportunities and live fulfilling lives. As I got older I started to feel like something was off about this narrative- I finally decided to look at the data, here's a thread 1/8
The US is not the best country in the world, it's not even in the top five. The US is number 7. 2/8

The US ranks 15th for citizenship. 3/8 https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/citizenship-rankings
The US ranks 15th for quality of life. 4/8 https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/citizenship-rankings
The US is the 49th safest country in the world, that's right, it's not even in the top 25. 5/8 https://www.digisilkroad.com/en/blog/article/101441/how-safe-is-america-compared-to-other-countries
HOWEVER , the United States ranks number 1 for most powerful countries. This ranking looks at our military budget and alliances. The US doesn't have the best international reputation that means that the US bought our space as the most powerful country 6/8 https://www.usnews.com/news/best-countries/power-rankings
We bought our space as the most powerful country by gross military overspending. Think I'm kidding? https://www.pgpf.org/chart-archive/0053_defense-comparison 7/8 .
When we talk about defunding the police and the military we aren't talking about leaving them high and dry. They already have WAY MORE THAN ENOUGH. We could do better, but we're not. The narrative that the US is better than the rest of the world is tired out propaganda. 8/8
