a thread debunking misconceptions about bisexuality. i’m tired of the biphobia. sincerely - an angry bisexual.
(rt for more reach)
[dm for sources!!]
first, what is bisexuality?

simply put: it is the attraction to two or more genders. (even all genders) this is where the bisexuality spectrum and it’s fluidity comes in, this is because every bisexual experiences these attractions differently.
1- “bi means two!!”
it is important to know the history of the bi- prefix. the word “bisexual” was used to describe intersex condition before it was used for sexuality. this is where the “bi” comes in. however, it does not mean that bisexuality is limited to attraction to two
genders. history: “to be bisexual is to have the potential to be open emotionally and sexually to people as people, regardless of their gender” - office pink publishing, “introduction”, bisexual lives- 1988.
bisexual is a medical term that we reclaimed, and we get to define individually depending on how we experience this attraction.
2) “bisexuality is transphobic and never included non binary people” this is very harmful, because bisexuality has always included non binary people. grouping “trans” as another category as if it is a third gender implies that they are not real men / women, which is transphobic.
bisexuality always have and always will include them.
history: “the actual lived non-binary history of the bisexual community and movement and the inclusive culture and community spirit of bisexuals are eradicated when a binary interpretation of our name for ourselves is
arbitrarily assumed.” - “bi any other name: bisexual people speak out” by lani ka’ahumanu.
3) “to be bisexual is to have a preference”
not all bisexuals have a preference, again, that depends on the individual. it is important to remember that we all experience it differently. some even lack gender preference, it is all valid.
history: “i love people, regardless of their gender.” — “early influences,” bisexuality, a study, 1979.
“some of us bisexual because we don’t pay much attention to the gender of our attractions”— the natural next step, 1995.
now, you may be thinking that this sounds a bit too much like pansexuality. allow me to introduce microlabels to you and bring up the same spectrum that i showed you earlier. but before that, what is a microlabel?
a microlabel does not mean that the sexuality or identity is inferior or less valid. it simply means that it is a part of something bigger and more fluid, because microlabels are concrete and specific. the “micro” does not mean inferiority.
now, let is take a look at the spectrum. some people may choose a microlabel that defines them more specifically. and others may identify as bisexual, both are valid. but to prevent bi-erasure, it is important to come to terms with, and UNDERSTAND that the right side of the spec-
spectrum, with no gender preference can be pansexuality as well.
but with gender preference, it can be omnisexuality.
the middle part of the spectrum can be defined as polysexuality.
BUT, it is all bisexuality as they are all multi sexual attractions. and people should be free to
choose what label to use depending on what makes them comfortable.
to conclude this thread; bisexuality has always been inclusive of non binary people, it is a very fluid spectrum, all multi sexualities would not exist without bisexuality.
the “bi-“ prefix originated as a medical term, microlabels do not mean inferiority.
everyone is welcome on my account as long as there is respect for each other. any biphobia will NOT be tolerated. any corrections or civilized discussions are ok. i’m open to learning something new always, more love to my fellow bisexuals.
