The Endless! I love this movie, it has such a *feeling* to it. I’m afraid of feeling trapped and they really nailed it.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe. Mad weird, and the weirdness is maintained throughout because they keep things mysterious.
Triangle. This one also slam dunks that trapped feeling. This is a really well done time-loop horror/thriller and if you think it doesn’t make sense, it does.
The Wailing. This movie is a deeply unsettling experience. I love a good slow burn, and this one has excellent payoff. My favorite Korean film.
Coherence. This one was surprisingly weird and cool. It’s intimate and tense, and the vibes are eerie and dangerous.
Train to Busan. I’m not big on zombie movies as a general rule, but this movie is A LOT. It’s cool, scary, funny, and so sad. The acting is incredible. Another favorite Korean film.
Cabin in the Woods. This movie is honestly the best, just watch it.
REC. It seamlessly blends zombie, paranormal, and found footage, and against the odds it’s an amazing movie. It’s immersive and intense, and it grips you through the whole thing.
As Above So Below. I had some problems with it, but overall this is a solid found footage. This one stands apart because of the setting and the atmosphere; very Dante’s Inferno. It’s easier to follow if you have a little background in theology or occult. Very claustrophobic.
Creep. Jesus Christ this movie is so uncomfortable. Don’t watch this movie if you don’t want to be uncomfortable. I don’t need to watch this one again but I absolutely recommend it to those of you who want to feel uncomfortable.
Mandy. What a movie. A bloody prismatic surreal experience with a radical soundtrack. When we watched this, my partner and I (not joking) said that we *wish* these people would make a Color Out of Space adaptation... and they DID!
Color Out of Space. I don’t care, I love this movie. It’s a great adaptation and it’s great on its own. It’s absolutely beautiful to look at. Lovecraft’s obligatory self-insert character is narrating the story. Just a really awesome and unique cosmic horror.
