A #mufc thread on my take on the Ole situation:
I think Ole has proven to be a fantastic man-manager who has revitalised the club’s dying spirit over the time he’s been here. Helped get Rashford and Martial hit superb heights. Promoted Greenwood and helped him thrive. There’s no doubts he’s had positive impacts.
He has overseen as solid a rebuild job we’ve seen post Sir Alex. Jose, Van Gaal and Moyes continuously had silly transfer targets and were always hesitant to get rid of genuine deadwood.
Ignoring the price tag (which is ridiculous, Maguire did improve us defensively last season (3rd best defence in the league). Wan Bissaka pre-lockdown was the best defensive full back around. Bruno of course an absolute game-changer. James was a £15m gamble that didn’t pay off.
He’s overseen the sales of Fellaini, Darmian, Smalling, Young, Valencia and Sanchez. Loaned out Pereria and Dalot and attempted to get rid of Rojo and Jones. That’s a great display of ruthlessness that we have rarely seen in the past.
In terms of incoming, his summer targets of Grealish / VDB, Sancho, Bellingham and Upamecano were all fantastic players, right age and profile that would’ve propelled us into the right direction. The board sadly did not back him in bringing those next level players in.
Last year he got us a 3rd place (albeit with one of our lowest point tallies ever) which is a brilliant achievement. Prior to January he was a deadman walking, Bruno and a few tweaks to the front 3 got us looking a very solid outfit.
He has proven an ability to get big results vs the Top 6 which is superb. HOWEVER, even after lockdown, the ability to beat the rest of the PL and low-block sides he is yet to master (arguably more important). There has been a reluctance to make big tactical calls and show guts.
Ole’s stubbornness to play 4-2-3-1 despite a dying breed of number 10s in world football and Pogba / Bruno more suited to a 4-3-3 is proving costly. Even 3-5-2 that has been used has been used defensively despite the options it can create.
We are yet to see Ole make any big calls on the pitch both with team selection and the substitutions. Proven far too timid. He’s far more afraid to upset the dressing room than to lose a game.
Keeping Maguire captain when Bruno is the dressing room leader and the captain isn’t playing well enough to start is nonsensical. If he wants to keep his job, he has to drop big players and show tactical nous vs all types of opposition.
Against Newcastle, we need to see Pogba get a jolt and be replaced by Van De Beek after his dire form. Maguire’s form has him playing like the worst CB at the club right now - he has a big call. He has to find a winning formula... If he doesn’t, he won’t make it to November.
