THREAD: Our parent organisation, @livingstreets, did something pretty special yesterday. They released their 5 year strategy.
Given we're in the middle of a pandemic AND a climate emergency, we need safe walking conditions now more than ever.
So, what's the plan?

1) We want people to choose walking.
Every time you leave the house you need to make a decision. How do I get where I need to go? We want everyone's first thought to be -- I'll walk! And we want them to be this excited about it

2) We want better streets that are, duh, nice to walk on.
That means no pavement parking. That means less street clutter. That means streets that are safe and pleasant to walk on.

3) We want people from all WALKS of life to get the most out of walking.
That means listening to all different folks about what walkable streets mean for them and making sure we deliver

How will we know if we've succeeded? Don't worry -- we've got the SMART goals (

1) We want a network of walking routes in every town and city, creating safe and attractive places for people of all ages and abilities;

2) We want The Highway Code revised to improve safety for people walking and cycling;
3) We want a default speed limit of 20mph for most roads in built-up areas;

5) We want at least 55% of primary school aged children walking to school;

To get this done right, @livingstreets will need to do three things.
They can't be quiet when things aren't working. They need to speak up and be vocal and challenge policies that are bad for walking in this country.

They need to step up.
To grow the community. Engage more people and get more people passionate and committed to protecting walking in this country.

Lastly, they need to stay strong.
Times are tough, and they're not going to get easier anytime soon. Pushing for change in this environment won't be easy. But if anyone can do it, they can.
