John 10:11 KJV
I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
In this passage, Jesus speaks about how He is our good shepherd. He also speaks about how a “hireling” or someone who is just simply hired to watch the sheep will see danger coming for the sheep and abandon them.
It is all too clear that in our lives, we have encountered many “hirelings”. We have experienced many people or even things being insufficient in our times of trouble. Many times we’ve heard the expression “it’s not my
problem”. Many times people have walked out on us when we needed them most. Many times, even the things of this world, that aren’t good for us and yet we used them for comfort, have proved so insufficient in our times of despair. But Jesus tells us that He is not like
the hireling, He will not abandon us. In seeing trouble heading our way, he sacrificed His perfect life so that the sheep would be saved. He intervenes in our situations, carries us when we cannot walk, prays on our behalf, works miracles in our lives, and brings us
through our storms. The hirelings in our lives would leave us to our fate, but our Lord is the good shepherd, who sacrificed himself for his beloved sheep.
