The Four Step Learning Cycle

Discovery

Comes from hearing an idea, principle, and/or concept that leads you to action. Discovery is derived from reading, observing, listening, writing, and talking. It is when you become aware of a step you need to take to get to your desired result.
Application

Where the rubber meets the road. Application is planning and putting into practice the idea, principle, and/or concept that you discovered. It is the step where you are actively testing the theory.
Reflection

Often overlooked, but most learning and growth happens after you take action and not during. Reflection is like looking into a mirror but instead of trying to see your face you are trying to see your experience and the results that it brought.
How To Reflect

What happened?

What were the results?

What was good about the experience? What problems did you occur?

Why did you have those problems? Has anyone else experienced those same problems?

Were the results worth the effort?

What will you do moving forward?
By reflecting on the application of your discovery you can build upon your experience and innovate to come up with new discoveries which might lead to your desired results.
Conclude

Determine whether or not the action was worth the results. Then move forward with continually applying your new discovery, forgetting about the discovery, or adapting your discovery to apply again.
By applying these 4 steps of the learning cycle you won’t just merely know facts and theory but you will have experience and your own personal knowledge.

Which will lead you to innovation.
