A new way of thinking about South Africa [a thread]

When you get 76.4 percent for a test you respond by saying "I passed" right?

You don't lead with, "I missed out on 23.6%"
A [white] friend of mine today mentioned today that we are a black country and by this line of thinking maybe we need to start thinking like this. [runs and hides and waits for the avalanche to be over]
But with regards to what Ntsiki Mazwai @ntsikimazwai
shared earlier today in the video clip i shared maybe that is how white South Africans need to adjust their lenses and perspective. https://twitter.com/ntsikimazwai/status/1316256242386386945?s=20
i know many people from all sides may think that kind of thinking is divisive and unhelpful and in some ways it may be but as a counter to white people expecting white faces and voices to dominate key spaces in a country where we make up 8% of the population the shift may help
My friend @meganshead blew my mind the other day with this truth that the government of this country took over from a government that focused on making things work for 8% of the population and suddenly had to make things work for 100% of the population.
Systems and structures that were designed well to benefit 8% of people of course were going to struggle when the rest of the country was added. This is an aspect of the legacy of apartheid we seldom think enough about.
And we HAVE HAVE HAVE to be able to hold two truths alongside each other. The corruption that has been connected to the present government has been deeply problematic AND the legacy left by the apartheid government was deeply problematic.
Any time you pick one over the other you only have half of the story.

In some ways, it will likely be uncomfortable for me who is used to white voices dominating all the spaces. But it makes sense that people who look like me should be seen/heard closer to 8% of the time.
i imagine a lot of white people will hear this and what will stand out to them is the idea of white voices being heard less. But that isn't as much as what this is about as majority voices that have been absent/missing getting more opportunities to be seen and heard.
