dumped over to his uncle and his wife, because being a single mother? just won't do for her acting career. also, the child—saihara, is a literal monster.

when i said dump, like literal dump. she left the baby in the arms of his uncle to dispose of. he had hideous stubby horns—

so it was obvious what shuichi was. but even then, uncle saihara could never just... do that to a child, no matter what this child was. so he took shuichi in. his wife was for his decisions, too—and even she wanted to raise shuichi with such kindness.

in a way shuichi was a gift

bc well—the saihara couple could never really have kids. aunt saihara p much loved shuichi, half-demon and all.

and growing up he would be taken to the church she volunteered in. same church has an orphanage attached to it—that's where he meets ouma.

ouma was this goofy kid, hard to read, spontaneous and saihara was way too timid for that energy but he did grow accustomed to it. he didn't have a lot of friends, due to his withdrawn self, so ouma pretty much wormed his way into his bubble

by sneaking up on him and spoiling every ending to the books he read on the church pews each morning (only to find out that they were not the real endings at all)

they somehow develop into friends. ouma is unaware of saihara's identity, hat and all.

ouma becomes close enough that the saihara couple is glad because at least shuichi has a friend, and has opened up since meeting him.

one day though ouma doesn't show up to play in the church gardens. a day becomes a week and—he's missing entirely.

and saihara is absolutely crestfallen at that so he instead opted to hanging around his uncle's detective work—maybe one day he could find out what happened to ouma.

the same time ouma disappeared, his aunt stopped volunteering at the church anyway. (and she would never say why)

some ten ish years later there's some rambunctious group going around, causing general mischief and petty crimes around ... churches, and it's saihara that managed to pin them down—well, the ringleader that is.

saihara could recognise the unruly purple hair anywhere—

it's his long-lost childhood friend but he looked different. battered a bit, much pale than he used to be.

saihara reached out for the dark cape flowing behind the smaller man's back and he never knows his own strength—perks of not being human—and rips it off.

ouma's got wings, or whatever's left of them, sprouting from the slits on the back of his strange uniform.

basic gist is—orphanage and the church was into some shady shit. the orphanage was a front to experiment on some of the kids and ouma had the misfortune of being one of those kids to be sent off into a facility somewhere—

this church... had some goal of creating artificial, man-made angels, for whatever reason—and of course the experiments often went awry.

ouma had managed to scrounge up some people on his side (dice) and managed to barely escape said facility after many years.

ironically the experiments had given them some extraordinary capabilities that had allowed for their escape. super strength, regeneration, and the misfortunes of immortality for some of them

this au actually mostly centered around on saihara's dependence on ouma for well—food. because ouma could regrow lost body parts (even the wings he had developed) and saihara—saihara could pass off as human, honestly, but every now and then he—

needs to consume something human, to at least maintain his own humanity. that's where ouma comes in—because despite his current state ouma was still mostly human. ouma is just ... somehow going along with things idk why yet.

not obvious yet but the art for this concept came first and whatever you just read on this thread are just afterthoughts—not even the exact concept i had thought 2 years ago but mostly what i came up with then.
