WHAT DOES DEFUNDING THE POLICE MEAN; a thread
defunding the police means to take portions of the police depts' funds to other sectors of our community.
the police are not supposed to be there to solve mental health, housing, etc. there are people out there to do that. however the unbalanced funding has lead those people to not get those jobs because the government put that responsibility to the police.
and since we have also been wired to thinking that money is power, most of our police officials feel powerful enough to hurt the troubled and the marginalized, since they are paid to do so.
and being afraid for our safety is valid, but just because we took down a portion of the funds of the police to fund other agencies, doesn't mean we are in danger. we allocated the funds to other agencies so they can help with our safety.
a big example of why we should defund the police is the 2020 national budget (PH). the budget for national defense is 191.7B, while health goes at 101B. fast forward today where our healthcare workers aren't getting PPE while our police are living that ✨rich life✨.
and another example would be our police having more benefits than our healthcare front liners.
abolishing the police and defunding them are two different things; abolishing the policing system means to really take their power from them, while defunding them is just taking their funds and putting those to other sectors of the government to help ensure safety and peace.
for example: instead of putting so much funds for the police for the oplan tokhang to make drug users/pushers/sellers, we should chop up the funds for mental health services, rehabilitation programs, jobs, and more.
