THREAD: In 2013, we had the honor of being invited to an LGBTQ Pride reception at the White House. Both of us had worked hard for equality and had actually met when I was visiting DC, planning a rally to fight Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (1/8)
In previous months, we’d helped organize the marriage equality rallies that happened outside the Supreme Court when Prop 8 and DOMA were struck down. Then we headed to Provincetown, MA and made things official. (2/8)
A month later, we were at The White House and standing in a line to shake President Obama’s hand to thank him for supporting our right to be married and have a family. We were waiting as they made their way down the line of guests and Vice President Biden saw us and smiled. (3/8)
“JOE!...we just got married!” “That’s so great! Can I get a picture with you guys??” The Vice President grabbed my camera and tossed it to to an aide who snapped a shot. He hugged us and congratulated us again before heading out. It was all so surreal. (4/8)
But it was so real. Joe was the 1st sitting member of any administration to come out in support of my being able to marry the person I loved and here he was, right in front of me, genuinely happy that it happened. (5/8)
Here we are. 7 years later and a fight we thought we were done with is back up for debate as the balance of the Supreme Court is about to change due to an anti-LGBTQ judge being possibly confirmed to the bench. (6/8)
What will happen to my family? Will the government divorce me? Will they take away our sweet little boy? I’m legitimately terrified and I don’t know what to do. (7/8)
So I’m throwing everything I am behind the man I trust to not let that happen. The man who beamed from ear to ear when he heard we were married. I’m doing all I can to protect my family. I’m supporting @JoeBiden for President because I know he’s got my back.(8/8)
