For a while now, what the GOP has been doing reminded me of something, but I was having trouble thinking of what—but it just occurred to me. It was our first home-buying experience.
So, we lost all of our equity on our first flat in the crash and lived with my folks for 18 months back here in the US before we could think of looking for a place. And when we finally FOUND what we thought was our dream house, it was a short sale.
There were a LOT of properties that were short sales post 2010–monuments to the misery of the 2008 crash. The short sale WE were looking at had some pretty stunning circumstances behind it.
There were not 1 not 2, but 3 mortgages out on the house. Somehow, the first mortgage never got recorded, so the owners took out two more. This meant we had to wait for 3 banks to fight over who was the primary lender.
(The GOP analogy is coming, promise)

The owners were pissed at the bank for foreclosing (but you know, maybe don’t take out 3 mortgages?) so before they left, they STRIPPED the place. Knobs off cabinets. Plates off of switches. Handles off of drawers.
They turned off utilities so that the house was at the mercy of the elements for almost a year. While we waited for the banks to duke it out, we watched the place slowly rot. And one day we came to find THEY TOOK THE SHED. (We were pissed, but a little impressed)
We begged to have the power turned on for there to be some VERY basic climate control but we couldn’t make it happen. On our last visit, we discovered that with the warm weather, there was black mold EVERYWHERE. The house was now too broken for us to afford to repair.
The GOP is taking every knob, every switch plate, every handle and every useful thing on the way out. They won’t turn on the power, even during a pandemic and unprecedented financial crisis. If they can’t have it, they want it to rot.
When/ if this nightmare ends on January 21st, we are still going to have mold to scrape off, new ways of opening doors to find and a replacement for the fucking shed. There is SO much work ahead of us.
